At the Fifth Meeting of ACAP's Scientific Committee held in Argentina in 2010 an information paper (AC5 Inf5) submitted by the Secretariat gave a brief review of the conservation status of shearwaters of the genera Calonectris and Puffinus. The paper suggested that nine species (out of a total of 22) might be considered for listing within the Agreement.
The Critically Endangered Balearic Shearwater Puffinus mauretanicus, endemic to the Spanish Mediterranean, is one of these candidate species.
Dr Maite Louzao, who completed her doctorate on the species in 2006, has been co-authoring papers on the Balearic Shearwater over the last several years. Her thesis and recent publications on shearwaters of the Mediterranean are listed here.
